North v South team meetings cancelled

Updated: May 5, 2017

The national track and field season has come to an early close, with Athletics South Africa confirming this week the North v South Team Challenge meetings had been called off.
The inter-provincial events, which were expected to see northern provinces competing against southern provinces, had initially been scheduled for Durban on Saturday (May 6) and Bloemfontein a week later.
The federation moved the second leg to Germiston, however, after a technical blunder with the timing system marred the Speed Series meeting at Free State Stadium earlier this year.
Nonetheless, ASA revealed in a statement it had not been able to secure sufficient funding for the series and it was cancelled.
“There was also a poor response from athletes,” said ASA president Aleck Skhosana.
“After we were unable to find sponsorship we then took a decision to save the finances we have and redirect them towards preparing our age group teams to the various international competitions.
“Therefore, the cancellation is not because ASA has no money, but because we then decided to prioritise the preparation of athletes to (international) competitions.”
