ASA announces new Speed Series meetings
A new elite track and field series will be held this year, Athletics South Africa confirmed on Monday, after the federation released its final fixtures list for the 2017 season.
With local athletes preparing to qualify and compete at a host of international events, ASA said it hoped the four-leg Speed Series would assist them in launching their campaigns on the domestic circuit.
The new track and field series would be held in Durban (February 28), Bloemfontein (March 8), Potchefstroom (March 15) and Germiston (March 22).
In addition, athletes would have a chance to compete in North v South meetings, as well as national championships across all athletics disciplines throughout the year.
“We want to send the best possible teams across all age groups, in both individual and relay events, to carry the South African flag overseas, and we expect tough competition on the domestic circuit to propel our athletes forward as they prepare to take on the world,” said ASA president Aleck Skhosana.
Later this year, the country’s elite stars were set to turn out in various international competitions, including the World Relays in Bahamas (22-23 April), the CAA African Junior Championships in Tlemcen (12-15 May), the CAA African Youth Championships in Bata (29 June – 2 July), the World Youth Championships in Nairobi (12-16 July), the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bahamas (19-23 July) and the IAAF World Championships in London (4-13 August)
