Van Niekerk, Semenya up for IAAF awards

Two South African athletes are in line for the IAAF World Athletes of the Year awards, after Wayde van Niekerk and Caster Semenya were announced among the nominees on Tuesday.

Van Niekerk, the men’s 400m world record holder (43.03), and Semenya, who holds the national women’s 800m record (1:55.28), both won gold medals at the Rio Olympics in August.

Public votes would be taken until November 1 on the IAAF’s social media platforms, the global body confirmed, after which three men and three women would be announced as finalists.

The award winners would revealed in December.
