Ryan Sandes finished fourth in the annual Grand Raid ultra-distance trail race at Reunion island on Friday night.
Though he completed the last few kilometres of the 167km contest with French athlete Maxime Cazajous, and they seemingly intended to cross the line together in a tie, Sandes was awarded fourth spot in the unofficial results, crossing the line in 25 hours, 23 minutes, 31 seconds (25:23:31).
Cazajous was given fifth position, one second behind the South African.
Another French athlete, Francois d’Haene, won the race in 23:44:57, more than half an hour clear of compatriot Antoine Guillon who ended second in 24:15:22.
