Olympic 800m champion Caster Semenya was recognised for her superb performances this season when she was named Athlete of the Year at the Spar GSport for Girls Awards on Saturday night.

Semenya brushed aside an ongoing debate about her place in the sport, due to a change in rules for athletes with hyperandrogenism, by charging to victory at the Rio Games last week as she clocked 1:55.28 to break her own national record.

“I dedicate this award to my haters,” Semenya said after receiving the accolade.

Tannie Ans Botha, who guides 400m world record holder and Olympic champion Wayde van Niekerk, was named Coach of the Year at the 11th edition of the annual awards gala for women in sport.
