Wenda Nel and Antonio Alkana progressed safely through the heats of their respective events on Monday night (local time), in the evening session on day four of the track and field programme at the Rio Olympics.

Nel finished second in her heat in 55.55 to reach the semifinals of the women’s 400m hurdles event on Tuesday night.

Antonio Alkana finished fifth in his heat in 13.64, snatching one of four ‘fastest loser’ spots in the penultimate round of his specialist 110m hurdles discipline.

Three sprinters were set to compete in the early session on Tuesday, with Anaso Jobodwana joining teenagers Gift Leotlela and Clarence Munyai in the men’s 200m heats.
