Both SA athletes in action in Wednesday’s evening session (local time) were unable to progress in their events, on day six of the track and field competition at the Rio Olympic Games.

Rocco van Rooyen, struggling to find his best form after recovering from injury concerns, launched a best heave of 78.48m with his third qualifying attempt and he was knocked out of the men’s javelin throw competition.

South Africa’s most versatile athlete, Willem Coertzen, pulled out after three contests in the decathlon, unable to continue after again picking up injury trouble which had derailed many of his recent appearances in the two-day combined events discipline.
