Versatile athlete Khotso Mokoena settled for eight place in the men’s triple jump on Thursday night, after again struggling to find his best form in the build-up to the Rio Olympics.
The only SA athlete competing at the Diamond League meeting in Oslo, Mokoena produced a best attempt of 16.08m in the third round, falling 58cm short of making the four-man cut as he was eliminated from the competition.
He was 40cm outside his season’s best set in Pretoria in March and more than a metre off his national record of 17.35m set in Marrakech two years ago.
Alexis Copello of Cuba went on to secure victory in Oslo with a best leap of 16.91m.
While the former Olympic long jump silver medallist has qualified for both disciplines at the Rio showpiece in August, Mokoena has not competed in the single leap event this year, suggesting he will focus on the hop, skip and jump at the Games.
The eighth of 14 legs in the 2016 Diamond League series will be held in Stockholm on June 16.
