Irvette van Zyl was back on the road on Saturday, two weeks after her Olympic qualifying performance at the London Marathon, to reassert her dominance on the domestic circuit.
Van Zyl remained unbeaten on home soil this year, romping to victory in cold, windy conditions at the second leg of the Spar Women’s Grand Prix 10km series in Port Elizabeth.
She crossed the line in 33:28, well clear of Lebogang Phalula, who took second place in 34:09.
Phalula’s twin sister, Diana-Lebo, ended third in 34:10.
“I was so happy to win in Port Elizabeth. I’ve always hated the PE race because I’ve never been able to win here before,” said Van Zyl, who had also won the opening leg of the series in Cape Town.
“I almost felt like crying when I crossed the finish line because it was like a dream come true.”
The third of five legs in the annual women’s 10km series will be held in Durban on June 5.
