National champion Ruswahl Samaai was the best of the South African contingent on Saturday, taking second place in the men’s long jump at the Diamond League meeting in Shanghai.
Samaai launched a best leap of 8.14m in the fifth round.
While Chinese athlete Gao Xinglong achieved the same distance as the South African, he earned the win after producing a better series of jumps.
National record holder LJ van Zyl finished fourth in the men’s 400m hurdles contest, crossing the line in a season’s best of 49.13.
Olympic silver medallist Michael Tinsley of the United States won the race in 48.90.
Middle-distance specialist Rynardt van Rensburg, the only other SA athlete competing at the top-flight meeting, ended seventh in the men’s 800m contest.
Recovering from a poor start, after he hesitated at the sound of the gun, he was forced to work hard in order to close the gap.
Van Rensburg crossed the line in 1:46.69 on his Diamond League debut, with Ferguson Rotich of Kenya securing victory in 1:45.68.
World record holder David Rudisha faded to fifth place after leading off the final bend.
The third of 14 legs in the 2016 Diamond League series will be held in Rabat, Morocco on May 22.
