SCOTT QUALIFIES FOR RIO OLYMPICS
Distance runner Dominique Scott smashed her 10 000m personal best on Monday to achieve the qualifying standard for the Rio Olympics.
The US-based athlete took 15th place in 31:56.84 at Stanford University’s Payton Jordan Invitational in California, setting the fastest time by a South African woman in nearly 16 years in the longest track event.
Her time was well below the required mark of 32:15.00 for the Rio Games, as she chopped more than 14 seconds off her previous career record of 32:11.60 over 25 laps, which she had set at the Stanford meeting last year.
The 23-year-old athlete, in her final season with the Arkansas Razorbacks, became the third South African woman to dip under 32 minutes in the 10 000m event.
Only national record holder Elana Meyer (30:52.51) and former SA athlete Colleen de Reuck (31:56.00) have run faster.
