Organisers of the successful OneRun 12km race have launched another event, this one to be held over 10km in Johannesburg, and they have again promised to deliver a world-class spectacle.
The inaugural FNB Joburg 10k City Run would be held on September 24, promoters Stillwater Sports confirmed on Tuesday.
“Not only will thousands of runners share the streets with world-class athletes, but the excitement, vibrancy and energy that the event will bring to the centre of Johannesburg will be exceptional,” said Stillwater Sports managing director Michael Meyer.
“We believe the event will support the regeneration of the urban centre of Johannesburg and will provide the ideal opportunity for Johannesburg to showcase itself as a world-class city.”
The elite field would be announced at a later stage, but with organisers having proved themselves with the line-up produced for the One Run event in Cape Town last year, another quality turnout is expected at the high-altitude Joburg race.
The One Run 12km attracted some of the best distance runners ever to have raced on SA soil, with Kenyan former track specialist Emmanuel Bett and multiple world champion Vivian Cheruiyot winning the men’s and women’s contests.
“In addition to a fast, flat route, exciting on-route entertainment and vibrant event atmosphere, entrants can look forward to exploring iconic landmarks (in Joburg),” organisers said.
These landmarks included Nelson Mandela Bridge, Constitution Hill, Mary Fitzgerald Square, Wits University, Neighbourgoods Market and Ellis Park Stadium.
