The nation’s top Under-18 athletes were delivered a major blow on Thursday when it was revealed the CAA Southern Region Youth Championships had been called off.
The regional age group showpiece, one of few highlights for the country’s youth track and field prospects in a season which is geared towards the World Junior (U-20) Championships, was scheduled to be held in Lesotho¬† on April 30 and May 1.
“We (ASA) were informed today by the President of the Southern Region of the Confederation of
African Athletes (CAA) that, due to several reasons, the CAA Southern Region U-18 Championships… has been cancelled,” Athletics SA told members in a statement.
The federation apologised on behalf of the organisers and said it would make every effort to provide U-18 athletes with other opportunities, in order to keep them motivated, perhaps ensuring their hard work in training did not go to waste.
