While they struggled to put up a fight as individuals, the SA team delivered a solid all-round performance, working together to secure two bronze medals at the African Cross Country Championships in Yaounde, Cameroon on Saturday.
Women’s captain Diana-Lebo Phalula and junior prospect Simonay Weitsz were the best of the SA athletes, taking 13th position in their respective races.
Thabang Masiako was the first SA athlete in the senior men’s contest, taking 15th position, and Ikageng Gaorekwe led the junior men home in 17th place.
With Kenya sweeping the gold medals in all categories, and Ethiopia putting up the strongest fight in the team competitions, the national senior women’s and junior men’s squads both held off strong opposition from some of Africa’s most prominent distance running nations to reach the bottom step of the podium.
The senior men and junior women both ended fourth overall.
“This is a great achievement from our teams,” said ASA president Aleck Skhosana.
“Two bronze medals and two fourth placings is something to be joyful about. Many other countries went home empty handed.”
A total of 28 countries participated at the fourth edition of the continental event.
