South Africa has withdrawn its team for next week’s World Student Cross Country Championships, after it was left too late to secure travel documents for athletes.
University Sport SA (USSA) had announced an 11-member national squad last month for the biennial showpiece to be held in Cassino, Italy.
“Due to unfortunate circumstances we are forced to announce the cancellation of the tour to the FISU World Student Cross Country by team South Africa,” the USSA Athletics body told tertiary institutions in an email on Friday.
Attempts had apparently been made by the USSA office and USSA Athletics to “rescue the situation” but proof of payment for costs had not been received from the various institutions, and it was too late to acquire all the necessary visas and finalise travel arrangements.
“We have regretfully taken a decision to cancel our participation,” USSA Athletics stated.
