Caster Semenya will compete in her first 800m race of the season

Sprinters and middle-distance runners will be targeting world-class performances at the second leg of the ASA Nite Series in Cape Town on Tuesday evening.
While in-form speedsters Akani Simbine and Wayde van Niekerk will not be in action, there will be plenty of interest in the men’s 100m race at Green Point Stadium.
Former national record holder Henricho Bruintjies, who now trains with Simbine, will open his 2016 campaign in the short dash as he lines up again junior prospect Gift Leotlela and World Championships 400m finalist Isaac Makwala of Botswana.
In the women’s 100m sprint, Alyssa Conley will hope to build on her impressive form after achieving the 100m and 200m qualifying standards for the Rio Games in the early stages of the Olympic season.
Distance specialists will also look to shine by taking advantage of the sea level meeting, with some exciting races on the cards.
Elroy Gelant, who won the SA 10km title on the road in Sasolburg last month, will turn out in the men’s 5 000m race, along with national 1 500m record holder Johan Cronje who will compete over 12-and-a-half laps as part of his preparation for next month’s SA Senior Championships in Stellenbosch.
Olympic silver medallist Caster Semenya will contest her first 800m race of the season, after clocking a 400m personal best of 51.47 seconds in Pretoria earlier this month to qualify for the Rio Games in the one-lap event.
The men’s 800m race features World Student Games bronze medallist Rynardt van Rensburg.
In other disciplines, national record holder LJ van Zyl spearheads the field in the men’s 400m hurdles, while Youth Olympic Games gold medallist Gezelle Magerman lines up in the women’s event.
On the infield, former World Championships finalist Victor Hogan, who faces a line-up including African Games champion Russell Tucker, will headline the men’s discus throw competition.
The two-hour meeting starts at 6pm.
