Wheelchair racer Pieter du Preez has received international recognition for his achievements in the 2015 season, after being nominated for the Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability accolade at the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards.
Du Preez was one of six nominees announced in the disability category on Wednesday, and the only SA athlete shortlisted for any award at the annual ceremony to be held in Berlin on April 18.
He was in fine form last season, breaking the long-standing world record in the men’s 10 000m event in the T51 class, clocking 35:50.96 in Arbon, Switzerland, and setting new African marks in the 200m and 1 500m.
An accomplished handcyclist, he also won the road race and time trial gold medals in the H1 class at the Paracycling World Championships.
Aside from Du Preez, the other nominees for the disability award include French skier Marie Bochet, Brazilian swimmer Daniel Dias, Cuban sprinter Omara Durand, Chinese speedster Liu Cuiqing and boccia player Leung Yuk Wing.
