Wayne Snyman shattered the South African record in the men’s 3 000m walk on Saturday, winning a track race held on the sidelines of a training camp in Brisbane, Australia.
The 30-year-old race walker clocked 11:10.03 to break the previous mark of 11:20.39, set by Lebogang Shange in Pretoria last season, by more than 10 seconds.
Snyman, the bronze medallist in the 20km event at last year’s African Games in Brazzaville, improved his personal best over seven-and-a-half laps by 24 seconds.
This is the first SA senior record to fall in the 2016 season, though the mark still needs to be ratified by athletics authorities.
