Andre Olivier made a return to top-flight competition on Saturday night, taking fourth place in the men’s 800m race at the Ifam indoor meeting in Ghent.
Competing for the first time in more than eight months after recovering from a foot injury, the Commonwealth Games bronze medallist had hoped to dip under the qualifying standard for the World Indoor Championships in Portland.
Though he crossed the line more than two seconds outside the required mark in 1:48.81, Olivier had another few races planned before the qualifying window was due to close next month.
Moroccan teenager Mostafa Smaili won the race in 1:46.50.
In the women’s 800m event, Mandie Brandt trailed home in fifth place in her heat in 2:10.16.
Fellow South African Cherese Jones ended sixth in her 60m heat in 7.61 and missed out on a place in the final.
