Theodore Nothling and junior athlete Simonay Weitsz won the men’s and women’s 1 000m races at UJ Stadium in Joburg on Friday night, bringing the annual Eagles Club Classic Shootout series to a close.
Nothling broke his own record at the event by 0.10, holding off a charge from Siya Derison to cross the line in 2:21.86 and retain the title he secured last year.
Derison took second place in 2:22.62 and Hannes Naude finished third in 2:23.10.
Weitsz surged clear of two-lap specialist Anuscha Nice down the home straight to bag the women’s title in 2:44.15.
She was a little more than a second outside Mapaseka Makhanya’s race record of 2:43.04, set last season.
Invited Under-12 male athlete Decland Wright ended second in 2:45.44, with Nice taking second spot in the women’s race, and third overall, in 2:46.65.
