Athletics South Africa released official times for the men’s and women’s winners on Sunday, though full results remained unavailable for the 2016 SA 10km Championships.
The annual championships had been held in Sasolburg a week earlier but the federation delayed the release of the official results after experiencing technical issues at the finish.
Runners had been backed up before the line after a queue was formed at the finishing area, seemingly making it impossible to calculate actual finishing times of athletes who were forced to walk or wait before completing the full distance.
According to ASA, race winner Elroy Gelant clocked 29:18, though the times of second-placed Stephen Mokoka and the rest of the men’s field were not released.
Women’s winner Lebo Phalula finished in 34:04. The remainder of the women’s line-up were also omitted from the official release.
According to unofficial results on the day of the race, Mbongeni Ngxazazo had earned the bronze medal in the men’s event, while Lebogang Phalula and Nolene Conrad ended second and third in the women’s contest.
“We are happy that we have been able to release the final results within a reasonable timeline,” said ASA president Aleck Skhosana.
“I want to thank all teams, their managers and athletes for their patience and understanding, plus our technical officials for speedily attending to the glitch.”
