Elroy Gelant is the 2016 SA 10km champion

Elroy Gelant stunned a quality line-up on Saturday, bouncing back to form to win the men’s title at the SA 10km Championships in Sasolburg.
The versatile athlete proved he had overcome the injury troubles that derailed his 2015 season, outsprinting defending champion Stephen Mokoka in the chase for the line to regain the title he won in 2012.
Gelant, representing Athletics Central North West, secured victory in 29:15 at the high-altitude race, which was held in conjunction with the annual Sasol Marathon.
“I had a horrible year (in 2015) as I had a hamstring injury… so this was an important race to me,” Gelant said.
Mokoka, who was aiming to lift his fifth national 10km crown, settled for second place in 29:18, as he stepped on the podium for the sixth time in eight years.
Mbongeni Ngxazazo earned the bronze medal, a further 11 seconds off the pace.
Pre-race favourite Lebo Phalula, turning out for Central Gauteng Athletics, won the women’s event in 34:09 to reclaim the national title she won in 2013.
Her twin sister, Lebogang Phalula, took second place in 34:48, with former champion Nolene Conrad grabbing the last spot on the podium in 35:03.
Athletics SA president Aleck Skhosana said there had been a glitch with the electronic timing, and there were errors with placings and times in various categories.
“We will release (the official results) in the course of the week,” Skhosana said.
