South Africa announced a 13-member provisional squad on Monday for the IAAF World Half-Marathon Championships in Cardiff in March.
The squad included the top seven men and top six women from last year’s SA Half-Marathon Championships in Port Elizabeth, which produced plenty of fast times with Lucky Mohale (1:02:06) leading eight men under 1:03:00 and Lebo Phalula (1:11:54) carrying four women under 1:13:00.
Stephen Mokoka, who was seventh at the national championships, was included in the squad, presumably based on past performances.
The versatile star, who led the SA team to fourth place in Copenhagen two years ago, has finished among the top 12 at three editions of the biennial 21km showpiece.
All athletes in the squad were expected to prove their fitness at the SA 10km Championships in Sasolburg next month, Athletics SA confirmed, and the final team would be announced on February 8.
“The selectors will use the
results of the prescribed races as a guide in the selection of the final team, but will not necessary select the athletes at the order that they finish,” the federation said.

Elroy Gelant did not run the trials

Wesley Botton says:

Rhyn, just assuming, but they probably picked seven men because of Mokoka’s performance history. Looks like they made an exception for him

@Mbuso, Lucky Mtshali also not in the top 10 at SA champs
