The South African athletics community was left reeling on Monday after 26-year-old distance runner Thitshaamba Ravhandalala passed away following a long battle with illness.
Ravhandalala was an accomplished athlete on the domestic circuit, finishing second behind Mamphielo Sibanda in the women’s 4km race at the 2013 SA Cross Country Championships in George, and taking seventh place at the 2014 SA 10km Championships in Bloemfontein.
A former student at Tshwane University of Technlogy, she represented South Africa at the 2012 World Student Cross Country Championships in Lodz, Poland, and the 2013 World Student Games in Kazan, Russia.
Ravhandalala enjoyed her best season in 2014, setting career records over 1 500m (4:32.22) and 5 000m (16:58.04) on the track, as well as 10km (36:23) and 21km (1:18:49) on the road.
