Experienced marathon runner Tanith Maxwell will have one more crack at the Olympic qualifying mark, according to her domestic club.
Maxwell’s attempt to book her place in the team for the Rio Games was abandoned at the weekend when she dropped out of the Gran Canaria Marathon in Las Palmas.
“Tanith is not done with Rio qualification, as she is due to run a marathon in Europe,” said Boxer Athletic Club manager Rhyn Swanepoel.
“Tanith was very ill in Las Palmas.”
Swanepoel did not confirm which race she would target in a hard-fought qualifying contest, with seven women having already dipped under the required time of 2:45:00.
The Athletics SA qualifying window closes at the end of April.
Maxwell, who has represented South Africa four times at the IAAF World Championships, hopes to compete at the Olympics for the second time after finishing 81st over the classic 42km distance at the 2012 London Games.
