Ultra-distance runner Caroline Wostmann was named Spar GSport Athlete of the Year, with athletics scooping more awards than any other sport code at the annual women’s awards gala in Johannesburg on Friday night.
Wostmann, who won the Two Oceans and Comrades Marathon double this year, ended the foreign dominance of the women’s divisions at the country’s two most prestigious ultra-distance races.
She received the accolade ahead of rhythmic gymnast Grace Legote and the rowing pair of Naydene Smith and Lee-Ann Persse.
Five-time Paralympic champion Ilse Hayes Carstens was also among the award winners, receiving the honour as Athlete of the Year with a Disability, while Youth Olympic 400m hurdles champion Gezelle Magerman was named Junior Athlete of the Year.
Meanwhile, former distance runner Zola Budd, sprinter Geraldine Pillay and high jumper Hestrie Els (nee Cloete) were among the recipients of Ministerial Recognition of Excellence Awards, along with grassroots sports pioneer Faith Sibeko.
The Sponsor of the Year award was won by Nedbank, for its contribution to women’s sport over the years, including its support of road running.
