After producing consistent performances for the last two seasons, repeatedly knocking on the door of the SA 100m record, Carina Horn finally hit the mark at the World Challenge meeting in Madrid on Saturday night.
Horn won her heat in 11.06 seconds to equal the 25-year-old national record held by Evette de Klerk, improving her personal best by 0.10.
She went on to finish third in the final in 11.10, clocking the second best time of her career, with Jamaican Elaine Thompson securing victory in 10.90.
Meanwhile, Cornel Fredericks bounced back with a bang in his first race of the season after recovering from an Achilles injury.
The Commonwealth champion took fourth place in the men’s 400m hurdles in 49.50, achieving the qualifying standard for next month’s World Championships in Beijing.
Jeffrey Gibson of the Bahamas won the race in 48.89.
