South Africa’s most versatile athlete, Willem Coertzen, narrowly missed out on his second African record in four weeks, taking second place at the Erdgas Mehrkampf meeting in Ratingen, Germany on Sunday.
Coertzen racked up 8 341 points, falling just 57 points short of the continental decathlon mark he set in Gotzis, Austria last month.
His performances in Ratingen included personal bests in two of the 10 disciplines, launching a 14.50m effort in the shot put and clocking 14.06 seconds in the 110m hurdles.
German Michael Schrader, the World Championships silver medallist, won the two-day Combined Events Challenge meeting with 8 419 points.
