Rocco van Rooyen launched a massive personal best in Cape Town on Saturday, smashing his career record by more than five metres in the men’s javelin throw event at the ASA Invitation meeting in Cape Town.
Van Rooyen secured victory with a superb 85.39m effort, nearly 15 metres ahead of second-placed Phil-Mar van Rensburg, as he climbed to fourth position in the all-time SA rankings.
Only Marius Corbett, who holds the national record of 88.75m, Tom Petranoff and Robert Oosthuizen have thrown further.
His performance was also three metres further than the qualifying standard for the IAAF World Championships in Beijing in August.
Sprinter Wayde van Niekerk also stood out at the meeting, which was hosted by Western Province Athletics, with an easy win in the men’s 200m race.
Dropping down in distance, the national 400m record holder coasted to victory in 20.59 seconds, finishing 0.63 clear of Swaziland’s Sibusiso Matsenjwa who took second place.
Van Niekerk chopped nearly half a second off his season’s best, missing the entry standard for the global championships by 0.09.
