On target for another World Challenge victory, Wenda Nel hit the final hurdle and lost momentum in Ostrava on Tuesday night, while Elroy Gelant produced a gutsy performance.
Nel continued her fine form, starting well and again leading off the top bend in the women’s 400m hurdles race., but she stumbled and ended third in 55.47.
World champion Zuzana Hejnova of the Czech Republic won in 55.13
In the men’s 5 000m race, Gelant produced a solid performance, sticking with the lead group for more than 11 laps.
Lying fifth at the bell, he was dropped on the last lap but fought back to chase down Kenyan Japhet Korir, grabbing fourth position in 13:28.69.
Pre-race favourite Dejen Gebremeskel of Ethiopia secured victory in 13:23.74.
The next top-flight event of the track and field season will be the Prefontaine Classic, a two-day Diamond League meeting in Eugene, Oregon, on Friday and Saturday.
