Khotso Mokoena made a solid international season debut on Sunday to qualify for the World Championships in Beijing in August.
The national record holder, who is hoping to compete in the long jump and triple jump events at the global showpiece, produced an 8.11m effort in the single-leap discipline to finish fifth at the Diamond League meeting in Shanghai.
He surpassed the qualifying standard by one centimetre.
Meanwhile, fellow South African Sunette Viljoen continued her fine form, taking second position in the women’s javelin throw with a 63.60m effort.
HuiHui Lu of China secured victory with a 64.08m meeting record.
Former World Championships finalist Victor Hogan ended 10th in the men’s discus throw.
Hogan, who launched a best heave of 60.01m, was eliminated midway through the event as he did not make the eight-man cut.
The third leg of the Diamond League series will be held in Eugene, Oregon, on May 30 and 31.
