ASA EXPANDS TRACK AND FIELD SEASON

Updated: May 11, 2015

The domestic track and field season has been extended, with Athletics SA adding two more top-flight meetings to the schedule this month.
While the senior fixtures list ended last week with the SA Open Championships in Potchefstroom, as momentum started building towards the international campaign, the national federation said on Monday it would hold invitation meetings in Germiston (May 16) and Cape Town (May 23).
“These meetings will give our athletes more competition time to prepare for the upcoming World Championships scheduled for China in August,” ASA said in a statement.
Both events would be two-hour meetings, held between 11am and 1pm, with the second hour being televised live on SABC 2.
The first four athletes in each event at the SA Senior Championships in Stellenbosch last month would be invited to compete, ASA confirmed, and the host provinces would be responsible for filling the remaining places in the start lists.
The top three athletes in each discipline would receive prize money, with event winners earning R2 000, silver medallists taking home R1 000 and third-place finishers receiving R500.
