Former national 10km champion Sibusiso Nzima finished fourth in 2:16:35 at the Dusseldorf Marathon, in Germany, on Sunday.
The 28-year-old athlete was less than three minutes outside his personal best of 2:13:42 set at the Hamburg Marathon two years ago.
Marius Ionescu of Romania, a former 10 000m bronze medallist at the European U-23 Championships, won the race in 2:13:19,
American Annie Bersagel, a lawyer by profession, won the women’s race in 2:28:29.
Nzima joined a list of seven other South African men – Stephen Mokoka, Benedict Moeng, Xolisa Tyali, Desmond Mokgobu, Lusapho April, Gladwin Mzazi and Africa Mailola – who had achieved the qualifying standard for the marathon event, four months ahead of the World Championships in Beijing.
