Rene Kalmer admitted she struggled on Sunday, settling for 14th place at the Lisbon Half-Marathon in Portugal.
She crossed the finish line in 1:15:17, nearly seven minutes behind Kenyan Rose Chelimo, who won the race in 1:08:22.
“It was a tough day at the office. Just one of those days,” Kalmer said.
The South African, who was more than four minutes outside her personal best, confirmed she would race again at the first leg of the Spar Women’s Grand Prix 10km series in Cape Town on Sunday, in the build-up to next month’s Vienna Marathon.
Mo Farah of Great Britain secured victory in the men’s race in Lisbon in 59:32, edging Kenyan Micah Kogo in a sprint finish.
