Pre-race favourite Stephen Mokoka lived up to the hype, producing a stunning turn of speed to retain his title at the SA 10km Championships in Pretoria on Saturday.
Mokoka, who will lead the national squad at the World Cross Country Championships next month, secured victory in 29:37 in the high-altitude capital city.
His team-mate, Gladwin Mzazi, was the best of the rest, grabbing the silver medal in 29:42, and Central North West athlete Mthobisi Baloyi used his speed as a middle-distance specialist to prevent a Gauteng North clean sweep, edging Precious Mashele for the bronze medal.
Baloyi and Mashele, who won the SA Cross Country Trials last month, recorded the same time of 29:49.
In the women’s race, in the absence of most of the country’s elite women, 23-year-old Lorraine Novela bagged her first SA senior title in 35:34.
Dropping down in distance, marathon runner Cornelia Joubert secured the silver medal in 35:49, and Nicole van der Merwe showed maturity beyond her 16 years to take third place in 36:11, securing a Central Gauteng sweep of the podium.
Central Gauteng Athletics finished top of the medals table with a total of 16 in all divisions (five gold, six silver and five bronze), followed by Athletics Gauteng North with 13 medals (five gold, six silver and two bronze) and Western Province Athletics with nine (five gold, two silver and two bronze).
