Revealing his ability at an early age, Andre Olivier clocked 1:47.92 when he was 17, and at the 2008 World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, he grabbed the 800m bronze medal in a race won by Abubaker Kaki of Sudan, the world junior record holder at the time. Olivier was eliminated in the semifinals of his specialist event at the 2011 Universiade (World University Games) in Shenzhen, China, but he helped the SA 4x400m relay team to the bronze medal. He had a terrific season in 2012, breaking one minute, 45 seconds for the first time, and setting a personal best of 1:44.29 in Monaco. At the London Olympics, he reached the semifinals and missed out on a place in the final by 0.51 seconds. With Mbulaeni Mulaudzi retiring early in the 2013 campaign, Olivier stamped his authority as the country’s top 800 runner, dipping under 1:45.00 five times in the space of one month. He was forced to withdraw, however, on the eve of the World Championships in Moscow after picking up a stress fracture in his left foot, bringing an early end to his season.
